Monzo_horz_lightbgMobile-first UK bank Mondo has rebranded, after a legal challenge from a similarly named company – the exact identity of which hasn’t been disclosed – back in June.

The company’s new name will be ‘Monzo’, picked from 12,560 suggestions provided by its users.

“We’ve been combing through the names and working closely with our legal team to find one that we love and that we feel confident keeping for the next 100 years, which hasn’t been easy,” reads the blog post announcing the name change. That process, however, apparently didn’t include consulting internet font of wisdom Urban Dictionary, which offers a slightly less savoury definition of ‘monzo’.

Monzo – Mondo, at the time – was granted its UK banking license by the FCA and PRA earlier this month.

The bank is now printing and distributing its prepaid cards bearing the new name, thoughpre-existing ‘Mondo’ cards will continue to work.

Monzo has changed its social media presence – [email protected] on Twitter and monzobank on Facebook – to match the rebrand, along with its website, now monzo.com. It’s not all plain sailing, however. If you visit getmonzo.co.uk, similar to the bank’s previous URL getmondo.co.uk, you’ll be greeted with a cheeky ad for rival challenger bank Starling Bank.
