Samsung is reportedly preparing to launch a flexible 7-inch screen smartphone with a secondary display bar on the outside of the device

Back in the hazy, pre-smartphone days of yesteryear, flip phones were all the rage. Brick phones were out and anyone with even an ounce of street cred had a cool-looking flip phone.

Who can forget Kelly Rowland messaging her boyfriend via Microsoft Excel on her Nokia flip phone in Nelly’s 2002 song ‘Dilemma’? Iconic.

Now, Samsung is reportedly planning to reinvent the flip phone market by releasing a foldable phone early next year.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the new tablet-like model will have a flexible 7-inch screen and a secondary display bar on the outside of the device.

The foldable phone, currently codenamed ‘Winner’, is expected to cost more than $1,500 when it’s released.

The official release name is reputed to be ‘Galaxy X’ and it’s likely to be unveiled at the next CES in January 2019.

Back in 2014, Samsung put out a trailer featuring a concept foldable phone, which you can watch here (just try to hold your nose through the terrible, terrible acting):

This comes as Apple prepares to regain some ground in the smartphone stakes by rolling out a host of new features including iPhones in grey, blue, red and orange as well as an all-new 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus.

And in other exciting Apple news, photos have been leaked which apparently show a prototype for a new iPhone charger that could have super-fast charging.

According to 9to5Mac, the charger is an 18W USB-C charger, which will allow users to quickly charge their phones from 0% to 50% in under half an hour.
